All about the Forest Hill office and our team!
We are serious about hygiene and patient education!
Most people think of pre-teens and teens when they think of orthodontics but there are good reasons children should get an orthodontic evaluation much sooner. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. At an early age the orthodontist is able to detect developing orthodontic problems. We utilize a panoramic x-ray that enables us to see all of the teeth that are in a patient’s mouth and also those still developing under the gums. The first step, Phase 1, is done while the patient is still growing and still has some primary, or baby, teeth present. The skeletal part of the problem is corrected at this time. The second step, Phase 2, is done after all of the permanent teeth have erupted and growth has slowed or stopped. Sometimes treatment is not indicated beyond Phase 1.
In adults, the correction of orthodontic problems results in benefits beyond improving self-confidence and self-esteem. Treatment improves oral health by helping to prevent or improve periodontal problems, prevent or reduce bone loss around teeth and improve the function of teeth. It is never too late for a better smile and facial appearance!
We work with our patients, particularly our students, to help them understand the importance of good hygiene and everyone seems to appreciate the time we take for education. The best way to ensure a clean and healthy smile is brushing, flossing and rinsing. Food particles can accumulate on teeth and in braces, and over time, turn into plaque. The bacteria that results from this accumulation can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and decalcification (bright white spots). To avoid these problems while you are in orthodontic treatment, take special care of your braces, teeth and gums to ensure you will have the best possible result. We recommend the use of an electric toothbrush during treatment and during your lifetime as it offers the very best technology. Our patients (and parents) love that power brushes make cleaning easier! Straight teeth are a given in our practice but we also strive for healthy teeth and gums during treatment by mentoring our patients through the process. Did you realize toothbrushes need to be replaced more often during treatment with traditional braces? The bristles wear down more quickly. We are here to guide our patients on all aspects of oral hygiene. It is also important to floss and use an antibacterial mouthwash with fluoride throughout your orthodontic treatment and beyond for optimal oral hygiene. Our staff is specially trained to ensure a great outcome!
Successful orthodontic treatment requires more than just great hygiene. It includes cooperation between the patient, parents, the family dentist, and our office. We have many systems in place (including fun games for the patient) that will exceed your expectations!
